What
is Design for Six Sigma (DFSS)?
![]()
Design for Six Sigma is a systematic methodology,
based on tools, training, project management, and discipline, that is used for
optimizing the process for designing products, services and processes, in order
to achieve superior designs that maximize customer value at Six Sigma quality
levels.
Why DFSS is essential?
Design decisions made
during the early stages of the design life cycle have the largest impact on
total cost and quality of the product. It is often claimed that up to 80% of
the total product cost is locked-in during the concept development phase. Poor
design concepts adopted at early design stage are easy to correct at an early
stage of the product development project, but very costly to correct later on.
Thus, superior customer value, creative concepts, and robust performance of the
product are all intrinsically established during the early design stages.
By applying the discipline and tools of DFSS, potential errors can be identified and eliminated quickly so that costly engineering changes are avoided, product development cycles can be accelerated, and project budgets can be kept under solid management control. This translates into robust and fast product development that is successful consistently!
